Default "Namaste" and Suggestions of Influences from an Edgar Cayce Reading

This is Edgar Cayce Birthday Month on Forum.Lostpedia.Com, so I was struck how the scene between Christian, Sun, and Frank in the abandoned DHARMA processing station went down. I can't find the screen captures I'd like to find, but here is a scene after the moment Christian is shining his light on the wall of one of the DHARMA houses near the processing station, saying "197x, 197x, 1977."

    According to http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Lapidus

...They [Sun and Frank] walked into the Processing Center, which seemed to be completely abandoned. Soon, a door creaked open, and Christian introduced himself to Frank and Sun. Christian took them to one of the houses, where he showed Sun a picture of DHARMA's new recruits in 1977. Sun was shocked to see Jack, Kate, and Hurley among them. Then, Christian informed her that she had a long journey ahead of her. (Namaste")
This scene reminded me of a reading from Edgar Cayce, where Cayce is describing how it appeared to him to be accessing the Akashic Records. I'm not saying TPTB have lifted this scene exactly from the Cayce reading, but see the similarities to that sequence as Sun and Frank arrive at the dock, walk toward the buildings, see debris and hear sounds in the tree (probably The Smoke Monster), etc.:

    http://www.edgarcayce.org/about_edga...ic_records.asp

I see myself as a tiny dot out of my physical body, which lies inert before me. I find myself oppressed by darkness and there is a feeling of terrific loneliness. Suddenly, I am conscious of a white beam of light. As this tiny dot, I move upward following the light, knowing that I must follow it or be lost.

As I move along this path of light I gradually become conscious of various levels upon which there is movement. Upon the first levels there are vague, horrible shapes, grotesque forms such as one sees in nightmares. Passing on, there begin to appear on either side misshapen forms of human beings with some part of the body magnified. Again there is change and I become conscious of gray-hooded forms moving downward. Gradually, these become lighter in color. Then the direction changes and these forms move upward and the color of the robes grows rapidly lighter. Next, there begin to appear on either side vague outlines of houses, walls, trees, etc., but everything is motionless. As I pass on, there is more light and movement in what appear to be normal cities and towns. With the growth of movement I become conscious of sounds, at first indistinct rumblings, then music, laughter, and singing of birds. There is more and more light, the colors become very beautiful, and there is the sound of wonderful music. The houses are left behind, ahead there is only a blending of sound and color. Quite suddenly I come upon a hall of records. It is a hall without walls, without ceiling, but I am conscious of seeing an old man who hands me a large book, a record of the individual for whom I seek information.

Also at the lostpedia.wikia.com article cited above, it is noted:

Lapis is a Latin word for stone, and "Lapidus" is sometimes used in the names of rocks, like "Lapidus Granite".
Edgar Cayce had a lot to say about the healing properties of gemstones, especially the lapis lazuli. Unfortunately the edgarcayce.org site is protective of its information, but here's some general information:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_lazuli

Just some food for thought. The use of the Lapidus surname predated Frank, but TPTB may have retrofitted him to some esoteric purpose through the name.

There are a couple of threads besides the main "Namaste" episode discussion that discuss that scene and the Akashic Records:

ImNotDead's thread, "How is Sun Gonna Find Jin?" at http://forum.lostpedia.com/showthread.php?t=31441

MRPEMSTAR's only post so far, "Error code 108=OUT OF MEMORY," at http://forum.lostpedia.com/showthread.php?t=30659, talks about the Akashic Records.

And for something completely different, check out "The LOST Buddies Top Ten Questions" in the "How did Juliet & Ben come to pearl?" thread back in 2007:

To account for this distribution Philip Sclater, an eminent zoologist, proposed that a continent that had previously connected the land masses had sunk into the sea.
Many writers, pseudo-archeologists, psychics and the Tamil people believe Lemuria is an ancient land with a complex and rich social history, which is now lost (much like Atlantis).
Lemuria is known as the Atlantis of the Pacific, and it is presumed that the Island is located in the Pacific.
Stone monuments of mysterious origin dot the entire Pacific, from Japan's underwater site at Yonaguni, to cryptic Petroglyphs on Hawaii's Big Island, to Easter Island's Moai
Edgar Cayce (March 18, 1877 – January 3, 1945) was an author who claimed his psychic readings affirmed the existence of Atlantis and Lemuria. He wrote that survivors of Atlantis and Lemuria had concealed beneath it a "Hall of Records" containing all the wisdom of their lost civilization and the true history of the human race. Cayce claimed to have prophesied this Hall of Records would be rediscovered and re-opened.

Sundaland is a biogeographical region of Southeastern Asia that comprises the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago islands of Sumatra, java, Borneo, and surrounding smaller islands. During the ice ages, sea levels were lower and all of Sundaland was an extension of the Asian continent.Sundaland has been theorized to be one of the possible locations of the legendary civilization of Atlantis. There are also many Aboriginal myths that parallel the myth of Atlantis. Some speculate that Mayans and other early civilizations were derived from Atlantis.

Edgar Cayce believed much of modern-day technology is simply the rediscovering of knowledge and information possessed by the Atlantean culture. The Atlanteans were advanced technologically, this once spiritual populace lost their sense of purpose by becoming too attached to power and the material world.

By the end of the 16th century, alchemy became widely associated with medicine in some areas, leading to some use of the caduceus as a medical symbol. The Christiane I was Widmore's hired freighter...he wanted to find the Black Rock...why?

Because the Black Rock was filled with gold...

The Black Rock's gold was mined for Magnus Hanso in Papua New Guinea and should have been part of its wreckage. Papua New Guinea and the island are both volcanic islands and gold deposits are common in and near volcanoes. Go here to read more about... http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/28/wo...wing-gold.html

Widmore wants to find the Black Rock because he knows the Black Rock is on the island and the island is rich in deposits of gold. Even the ship's name refers to volcanic rock.

The Whispers talked about being 1000 feet underground... which could indicate a gold mining operation... the "plan" the Whispers spoke of?

    2
Volcanoes are located in all of the locations mentioned on Lost...i.e. Norway, Austrailia, Canada...It occured to me, expanding on the wormhole theories, that volcanoes may also be portals in space-time (one of the island's anomalies) through which global travel is possible...(the logo of Oceanic Airlines looks like a volcano as seen from above with many circles around it...circles = destinations. Desmond's mural shows people falling into the island's volcano. The Dharma polar bear may have found his way into a portal and died in the desert (Tunisia has volcanoes too). The circle with the dot in the middle (seen in glyphs and Desmund's mural with the number 42) is used a symbol for an eye (as well as the sun). Strangely enough the symbol is recreated in the location finder map on UNESCO's List of World Heritage Sites. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list

    3
Volcanoes vent hot air and magma. Some volcanoes are called black smokers. Black Smokers are particularly rich in gold deposits. http://www.amnh.org/nationalcenter/e...k_smokers.html
It could explain the origin of the Monster on the island. Extensive fields of volcanic chimneys known as 'black smokers' have been found in the Bismarck Sea near the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Reports suggest that the black smokers contain gold at concentrations five to ten times higher than those found in the West Australian goldfields. There is a catch, though. The black smokers are more than a kilometre below sea level, making their extraction an immense technological challenge....

The Looking Glass may be an observatory and station for the purpose of observing volcanic activity or for underwater gold mining.

The American psychic Edgar Cayce claimed he could commune with the dead, and heal people. Jacob has asked Locke to help him. Cayce suffered from a psychological paralysis (of his voice). John Locke may suffer a psychological paralysis of his legs. Cayce's paralysis was only relieved when he was in a hypnotic state. John is only able to walk on the island. Cayce suffered several "near death" experiences. John Locke has suffered at least 3 near death experiences (the crash, the implosion of the Swan, and the shooting by Ben). Cayce also claimed the people of Atlantis had a crystal that could harness energy and do all sorts of cool stuff like turn any metal to gold, but that the Atlantians got greedy and the result of trying to increase their profits set off a chain of volcanoes which ended in the destruction of their civilization.

Cayce may also be a template for MILES because Cayce was also used by treasure seekers who believed he could commune with the dead and find out the whereabouts of Atlantis, and other buried treasures.

Cayce also believed in karma and reincarnation. Good is oneness, and evil is separation.

He described karma as memory. As one relives situations, one meets oneself again, and a new decision point, or crossroads, is presented to the soul. (Also indicative of Desmond reliving his choice to marry Penny or not to marry Penny).

Cayce also believed that everyone involved in our present lives was very likely involved in our past lives. They have been involved in many of our past lives. Our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses, children, friends, colleagues, bosses and employees, and even our enemies began sharing life with us long before the present lifetime.

We get the feeling that the connections and relationships between our Losties are important, This is a cool idea.

    5
Alvar Hanso may have been interested in gold for it's healing properties.. gold has long been used to treat patients from ancient times to the present. Gold is used currently in treating inoperable cancers...the kind that Peter Thompson had and which Mittlewerk cured. "Colloidal Gold was first prepared in a pure state in 1857 by the distinguished English chemist, Michael Faraday. (Faraday is a familiar name). Many uses were found for the amazing solutions of "activated gold." To read more Gold as Medicine ,,, http://www.purestcolloids.com/history-gold.htm

Physical and spiritual healing are thematic elements of the show... the pregnancy deaths, cancer, paralysis, blood disorders, and mental illness...are part of the show.

As we're trying to figure the island out,
Maybe this information will help...LAPIDUS means In the pursuit of gold

What do you think happened to the Black Rock's gold?

Default Thanks for the 132-Year Shout-Out!

Well, Happy Birthday, Edgar Cayce month on LP is winding down, and what a rippin' success it has been!

Thanks for all the tens of thousands of replies from all you folks world--and spacetime--wide. Remember what Cayce said: "That as lived today is as tomorrow today, for today is tomorrow, tomorrow is today."

I can't but help but believe that the LOST writers have gleaned the Cayce readings for more plot angles. As noted above, the scenario of Christian leading Sun and Lapidus to the 'hall of records" in Namaste was quintessential Cayce material. And I think a case can be made that in "He's Our You," Sayid's drug-liberated consciousness may create a new timeline, for as Cayce said, "Mind is the builder."

...the healing comes from within, and the awakening of that within brings the full coordination of the mental, the spiritual, the physical body - for even as a body is of the triune nature, each must foot, fulfil, its own purpose; but at a ONENESS one with the other.

    Edgar Cayce reading 164-2

. . . for mind is the builder; for each cell in the atomic force of the body is as a world of its own, and each one—each cell—being in perfect unison, may build to that necessary to reconstruct the forces of the body in all its needs . . .

    Edgar Cayce reading 93-1
    http://www.edgarcayce.org/ps2/innerv...Van_Auken.html

    INNER VISION
    The Mind

    by John Van Auken

“That you think, that you put your Mind to work upon, to live upon, to feed upon, to live with, to abide with, to associate with in the mind, that your soul-body becomes! That is the law. That is the destiny.” He expands upon this: “Mind [is] the builder, the appreciator, the paralleler, the drawer of conclusions, the chooser....” And, Cayce says, mind is driven by “the ideal.”

    The Ideal is Mind’s Navigator

“As you contemplate, as you meditate, as you look upon the Mind, know the Mind has many windows. And as you look out of your inner self, know where you are looking, [where] you are seeking. What is your ideal? What would you have your mind-body to become?”
    http://www.edgarcayce.org/about_edgarcayce/esp/esp.asp

    E.S.P. - Extra Sensory Perception

If events continue to occur the same course-if people's attitudes, lifestyles, and world conditions remain the same-then psychics can "see" what the result will be. However, the readings make it quite clear that each of us has the gift of free will. If enough people use their free will and change what they are currently doing, this in turn will have dramatic effects on the future.

In the Bible, Jonah went to the evil city of Nineveh to tell the people about the destruction that was about to come upon them. However, the people of the city repented of their evil ways. With their free will, they changed their lives and, as a result, their city was saved. The ability of precognition, then, is subject to many more influences than either telepathy or clairvoyance.
    And from http://www.edgarcayce.org/dreams/dream_dictionary.asp
we have this possibility for the meanings of the Door to the Smokey Chamber under Ben's House and answers to the riddle, "What lies in the Shadow of the Statue?":

Door/doorway 1. openings, ways, or avenues of personal expression (137-109, A-1). 2. locking back door-wanting to avoid unpleasant conditions (294-48). 3. front door-the place of meeting that, which is newly coming into one's life (294-46). 4. trap door-a coming and unexpected new disclosure (900-265, A-10). 5. trap door- traps or pitfalls into which one can fall (294-138). 6. closing doors-counted-on opportunities will be shut, causing consternation (900-239, A-2). Other possibilities: 1. a barrier, which potentially can be removed. 2. death.

Statue 1. a part of self that is lifeless but which may awaken and come to life (262-8). 2. the physical product of that which is created first as a mental image (900-294). 3. an Image to show the "formulative spirit" or spirit that emanates (e.g., Statue of Liberty represents the spirit of a nation (262-2). Other possibilities: 1. how one aspect of self has been molded by someone else. 2. unfeeling, unresponsive. 3. someone who has been "put on a pedestal. " 4. a wish to keep alive the memory of a deceased person.

Today would have been the 133rd birthday of "The Sleeping Clairvoyant," Edgar Cayce, if he were still alive today.

His influence is everywhere, however, and I believe as the story of LOST is told after its finale, we will learn to what extent the writers depended on some of the concepts mentioned in this psychic's "readings."

In the meantime, at least two threads here since the last birthday anniversary a year ago have featured examinations of the concepts of Atlantis and Lemuria or Mu on the show:

Lost is based on the 'prophecies' of Edgar Cayce

    Atlantis and LOST connection

So grab a cup of coffee (Cayce's favorite beverage), sit down for a hand of Pit, and wish Ol' Edgar a happy birthday...wherever he is!

Edgar Cayce is actually part of the story of why I am who I am. My dad was really interested in the occult as a teenager and became a fan of Cayce. He decided to ride his bicycle from Florida to Virginia Beach to meet Cayce, and on the way he stopped and stayed in a motel. While there, he read a Gideon Bible, found the Truth he was looking for, and headed home.

So your dad met him prior to 1945?

Wow! That's a long ride on a bicycle! Great story!

Reply well, I guess not to meet him, just to visit the organization or whatever it was he founded in VA Beach.

And, yeah, I can't imagine being a teen and traveling so far on a bike.

The A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment)? Yeah, I was a card-carrying member in the 1980's.

Hey, Safety Scissors, I think we may see a Cayce influence in the Egyptian mythologies that are used in the series LOST, such as Osiris, who is suggested in Jacob's Tapestry at the end of Season Five. Here's some information on the "Tomb of Osiris," which may contain a "Hall of Records" discussed in the Cayce readings:

"Opening The Lost Tombs" - The Broadcast

    http://towers-online.co.uk/pages/shaftos3.htm

On the 2nd of March 1999, the FOX Television Network broadcast a programme entitled 'Opening The Lost Tombs: Live From Egypt.' The closing section of the programme dealt with the 'Tomb of Osiris', the location described in these pages. Here was an opportunity for the man in charge of the excavations to end the speculation about what lies beneath Khafre's causeway.

The text below is a full transcript of this part of the programme. For accuracy, no attempt has been made to correct any grammatical errors that were made by the participants. They are identified in the transcript with the following initials: MP - Maury Povich (FOX), SK - Suzy Kolber (FOX), ZH - Doctor Zahi Hawass. Details of camera shots are in italics.

SK: "Zahi, the American prophet Edgar Cayce talked years and years ago about a lost civilisation, hidden tunnels that would lead to answers about it. Can this have anything to do with that?"

ZH: "You know Suzy, Cayce, Edgar Cayce and lost civilisation, it's a legend, it's a myth. The arabs in the last century, they talked about all this and psychic brought the past back, but, to be fair, I did not excavate this tunnel yet. Then really, I don't know where it leads us but I always say you never know what the sand and the tunnels of Egypt may hide of secrets."
